March 2016: Prof. Biao Chen, along with his colleagues Profs. Yingbin Liang, Jian Tang, and Pramod Varshney from Syracuse University and Venugopal Veeravalli from the University of Illinois Urbana Champagne, was awarded an AFOSR grant to investigate a novel dynamic data driven approach situational awareness.

Jan 2015: Prof. Biao Chen is elevated to IEEE Fellow for his contributions to decentralized signal processing in sensor networks and interference management of wireless networks.
March 2014: Team Orange Wireless Warriors, comprised of Kapil Borle, Fangfang Zhu, and Yu Zhao, and advised by Dr. Biao Chen, competed in the final tournament of the DARPA Spectrum Challenge. DARPA Spectrum Challenge started in the beginning of 2013 and Team Orange Wireless Warriors is one of the 18 teams that qualified for the tournament among a field of 90 teams from around the country that competed in the qualification round. In the Competitive Tournament of the DARPA Spectrum Challenge, Team Orange placed 1st in group competition and 2nd in the semifinal round, just missing out the opportunity to compete in the final round where the top team from each bracket vie for the tournament prize.
March 2014: A US Patent, titled "Method for Secure Communication over Heterogenous Networks", was issued by the US Patent Office. The co-inventors of the patent are Dr. Jin Xu from Microsoft and Dr. Biao Chen. Dr. Xu is a COMLAB alumnus who graduated in 2010. The patent describes a technology that ensures provably secure communication between a source node and a destination node over a network of nodes. Different from many existing physical layer approaches, the method does not impose any constraint on the channel conditions involving the eavesdropper.
December 2013: A monograph, titled "Two-User Gaussian Interference Channels: An Information Theoretic Point of View", was published by Now Publishers in December 2013. This monograph, co-authored by Dr. Xiaohu Shang at Bell-Labs and Dr. Biao Chen, is part the Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory. It provides a comprehensive treatment of both classical and recent capacity results on the two-user Gaussian interference channel with single- or multi-antenna transceivers. Dr. Shang is a COMLAB alumnus who graduated in 2008.
August 2013: Ge Xu successfully defended her Ph.D. Dissertation, titled "Common Information and Sufficiency Principle for Decentralized Inference" on August 21, 2013. She is now with Nuance Communications, Burlington, MA.
